Debt In the Bedroom: 32% of Student Loan Borrowers Suffer Decreased Sex Drive

debt in relationship

A new survey by Student Loan Hero finds that student loans are impacting borrowers’ love lives and libido. But it isn’t all bad — results also show student loan debt isn’t always a deal-breaker.

Austin, Texas, November 2, 2017Student loan debt pervades every aspect of the lives of those who feel burdened by it. Debt can even reach into borrowers’ love lives, as a new study released by Student Loan Hero shows.

This survey set out to see if there is truth to the claims that people are delaying major relationship milestones because of student loan debt. And it delivered a mixed bag of results.

On one hand, student loan borrowers reported delaying relationship goals such as cohabitation, marriage, and starting a family. Not only that, but borrowers said they suffer from decreased sex drive due to their loans.

On the other hand, the majority of respondents said they don’t think a potential partner having student loan debt has to be a deal-breaker. Rather, they were more concerned with how their would-be partner handles the debt.

“Borrowers carrying student loan debt might avoid broaching the subject with their partner for fear of it becoming a deal-breaker in their relationship,” said Shannon Insler, lead researcher for the survey. “However, as the results of this study show, it’s not so much having debt that matters, but what you do about it. If you create a payoff game plan and confidently stand behind that, your debt doesn’t have to debilitate your love life.”

Key Findings

Twenty-three percent of respondents said they’ve kept their student loans a secret from their partner.

Thirty-six percent of respondents said they’ve lied to a partner about money. And 17 percent said it’s okay to lie to a partner about money.

Thirty-two percent reported a decrease — or total lack of — sex drive due to their student loan debt.

Thirty-three percent said the way someone handles their student loan debt could be a deal-breaker. Only 23 percent listed a high amount of the debt as a deal-breaker.

Seventy-two percent of respondents said that budgeting skills are the most appealing trait regarding a partner’s financial health. Only 29 percent listed having no student loan debt as the top trait.

Survey Methodology

Student Loan Hero conducted this survey via Survey Monkey on October 8, 2017, and collected responses from 1,011 student loan borrowers living in the United States, with a margin of error of ±3 percentage points. The screening question was, “Do you have student loans?” for which the target answer was “yes.”
