Figuring out how to enroll in income-driven repayment plans or become eligible for Public Service Loan Forgiveness can be confusing and frustrating.

A federal Direct Loan Consolidation allows a borrower to combine multiple federal student loans into a single student loan, making it easier to manage payments and expands eligibility for alternative repayment options.

Since 2012 we've been able to help over 200,000+ borrowers get a better handle on over $3.5 billion of student loan debt. Sometimes, a federal Direct Loan Consolidation is the only option to become eligible for several federal repayment options.

What exactly is a Direct Consolidation?

Federal Direct Loan Consolidation will combine any number of your federal student loans into a single federal Direct Consolidation Loan. In addition to helping you qualify for PSLF or REPAYE, consolidation offers the following benefits also can help you:

Simplify your repayment by combining all of your federal student loans into a single loan with one monthly payment, removing the hassle of multiple, different payments to different companies.

Repay your Parent PLUS loans if you are a parent who took out loans on behalf of your child. Consolidating these loans is the only way to qualify for the Income-Contingent Repayment (ICR) plan and PSLF.

Extend your repayment term by consolidating and choosing the Standard, Graduated, or Extended plan.

Get on another income-driven plan like IBR, or PAYE that you may not have been eligible for before, or had difficulty getting on because you had too many servicers.

Lock in your interest rate if you have variable rate loans. Consolidating them fixes them at the rate they were at when consolidated for the life of the loan!

Qualify in Public Service Loan Forgiveness - a Direct Consolidation can help certain federal student loans become eligible for PSLF.

What else should I know?

Sometimes a federal Direct Loan Consolidation is not the best option. Here are some additional notes to consider:

  • Consolidation won’t lower your interest rate. The rate on your new loan will be a weighted average of the loans you chose to include in the consolidation, rounded up to the nearest 1/8th of a percentage point.
  • If you only have federal Direct loans and are enrolled in an income-driven repayment plan, you may already be on track for forgiveness. In this case, consolidating will reset your progress!
  • If you have private student loans, you can’t include them in a federal Direct Loan Consolidation.
  • If you have already consolidated before, you cannot do so again unless you have taken out new federal loans since you originally consolidated.
