Student Loan Hero is excited to once again award six scholarships to dedicated college students for the fall 2018 semester.
After carefully reviewing hundreds of applicants, our financial experts selected six recipients. Two students took home the main prize of $5,000 each, while four students won the runner-up prize of $2,000. A total of $18,000 was awarded.
All the recipients wowed us in different ways — by overcoming adversity, working hard toward goals, or showing great passion about their chosen fields. Check out this Student Loan Hero scholarship winner’s inspiring story.
Rachel Goldstein, University of Pennsylvania
Runner-up prize: $2,000
When Rachel Goldstein was 8, her mother was diagnosed with breast cancer. Through quality care and advanced research that helped develop life-saving cancer treatments, her mom survived — but her battle with cancer inspired Goldstein to pay it forward.
In high school, Goldstein started Play for the Cure, which organized fundraising through her school’s sports teams. “As a community, we have accomplished and done more than I ever could have completed on my own,” she said. In three years, she has helped raise more than $8,000 for cancer research.
She used her savvy business sense to quickly develop Play for the Cure and turn it into a success. “To achieve my goals for [Play for the Cure], what I needed to [do] was, essentially, start a small business,” she explained. “I had to plan and manage the events, as well as build a network of coaches, athletes, philanthropic businesses, and the benefiting foundations.”
That hands-on experience led her to the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School, where she’ll continue to work with Philadelphia-based nonprofits on breast cancer awareness and research.
