Student Loan Hero is excited to once again award six scholarships to dedicated college students for the fall 2018 semester.
After carefully reviewing hundreds of applicants, our financial experts selected six recipients. Two students took home the main prize of $5,000 each, while four students won the runner-up prize of $2,000. A total of $18,000 was awarded.
All the recipients wowed us in different ways — by overcoming adversity, working hard toward goals, or showing great passion about their chosen fields. Check out this Student Loan Hero scholarship winner’s inspiring story.
Lissette Lomeli, Parsons School of Design
Runner-up prize: $2,000
Graduating high school senior Lissette Lomeli will be attending her dream art school, Parsons School of Design, in fall 2018, a goal she said she has had since she was 8.
“My parents came to the United States from Mexico in order to start a family and provide their children with the best opportunities possible,” she said. This dream would not be easy to accomplish. Though her parents worked tirelessly, Lomeli saw the difficulty they had in finding and keeping jobs.
“It showed me that I had to do something that would make all of the fear of deportation and the difficulty in finding a job worth it,” she said. “To me, that has always been to attend college and become an artist.”
Throughout high school, Lomeli balanced her studies with looking after her younger siblings because her parents could not afford child care. She said she made it through with the support of her parents.
“I want to take the worry off them … as I apply to scholarships because I know that we live paycheck to paycheck and we cannot afford the cost of this school,” she said. “They have never failed to support me, and now I want to support them by reassuring them that they have nothing to be worried about.”
