Student Loan Hero is excited to once again award six scholarships to dedicated college students for the fall 2018 semester.
After carefully reviewing hundreds of applicants, our financial experts selected six recipients. Two students took home the main prize of $5,000 each, while four students won the runner-up prize of $2,000. A total of $18,000 was awarded.
All the recipients wowed us in different ways — by overcoming adversity, working hard toward goals, or showing great passion about their chosen fields. Check out this Student Loan Hero scholarship winner’s inspiring story.
LaTashia Reed, Chamberlain University
Main prize: $5,000
When LaTashia Reed was a small child, she was diagnosed with a painful disorder that required intense medical attention. Her parents, who battled addictions, had no medical insurance to help. In fact, it was rare that Reed would get a hot meal at home, never mind serious medical care. Whenever her pain would become unbearable, her mom would drop her at a hospital’s emergency room and leave her there for days.
“Thankfully, I had nurses who loved me and cared for me like a child of their own,” said Reed. “My love for the nursing profession began here.”
Reed became the first in her family to graduate college when she got a bachelor’s degree in community health — and she’s currently pursuing a second degree. Now the mother of three boys, she’s fulfilling her lifelong dream of becoming a nurse at Chamberlain University. She hopes the career will provide more income for her family and a brighter future for her and her boys.
“Although I had a rough upbringing, I decided to use my experiences to mold me into an exceptional nurse,” said Reed.
Because of her childhood experiences, Reed dreams of one day starting a nonprofit organization to mentor, counsel, and support low-income teenage girls. “I was once that young girl who had no support, but I made a way and I want to be a positive role model to young ladies all across the world,” she said.
