Student Loan Hero is excited to once again award six scholarships to dedicated college students for the fall 2018 semester.
After carefully reviewing hundreds of applicants, our financial experts selected six recipients. Two students took home the main prize of $5,000 each, while four students won the runner-up prize of $2,000. A total of $18,000 was awarded.
All the recipients wowed us in different ways — by overcoming adversity, working hard toward goals, or showing great passion about their chosen fields. Check out this Student Loan Hero scholarship winner’s inspiring story.
Anastasiia Caviston, Columbia Business School
Runner-up prize: $2,000
Born in the USSR, “where most people had nothing, but everybody had the same,” Anastasiia Caviston grew up never wasting anything. Whatever she and her family had was precious.
“During my childhood, my parents were not paid for months at a time, while newly independent companies were trying to figure out how to conduct business in newly independent Ukraine,” she said. When her dad went to Sweden to find work in construction, her mom had to break Caviston’s piggy bank to get money for food.
“I remember that day very vividly,” she said. “It was the day when I grew up.”
She later moved to Kiev, where she got a college degree before moving to the United States. Two years ago, her parents joined her in the U.S., and now she’s pursuing another goal — a Master of Business Administration at Columbia Business School in New York.
“I want to focus my post-MBA career on sustainability driven by data analytics,” she said. Her expertise focuses primarily on the apparel industry.
“I cannot stand waste,” she said. “After all, the image of the broken piggy is engraved in my memory. It reminds me to work hard, to be frugal, and, most of all, to appreciate my parents, who sacrificed a lot to … give me [an] education that brought me from a small public school in a small town in Ukraine to an Ivy League university in New York City.”
